FAQsQ: What is a 'Draining Stall Floor'? A: A BIG Myth. Crushed rock or any other type of natural dirt or clay system will not allow urine to drain out of the stall. What happens is that the moisture will soak into the ground, but after time (this depends on the stall usage) the ammonia in the urine saturates the surface. This leaves a high concentration of ammonia particles to become airborne. The ammonia has a negative affect on the respiratory health of you and your horse. Q: Where does the urine go in a stall with stall mats or a seamless rubber floor? A: The urine absorbs in your bedding. When you use any of these types of products you need to evaluate your bedding and it's absorbency. Your bedding should now function mostly for absorbing urine. Mats or seamless rubber flooring now gives your horse a surface that offers a thermal barrier and gives appropriate cushion. Q: Why do some stall mats curl? A: Not all stall mats are made the same. Here are the types of stall mats you will find on the market: 1. Pressed Rubber Mats - These are least expensive mats. These are made with rubber granules (usually recycled rubber) that are mixed with glue and pressed together. These mats will breakdown because the glue, which is inferior to rubber, will cause the mat to become brittle, slippery and curl. If you look at these mats it is easy to see the individual rubber granules. Warranty: 5 years max. 2. Revulcanized Rubber Mats - The more expensive and best quality of all mats. Revulcanized mats are made with the same rubber granules, but they are mixed with a binder and placed into a mold. The mold then adds high pressure and temperatures to mold the rubber into one solid sheet of rubber. This process allows for a durable product that will give years of use. Warranty: 10-year FULL replacement or better depending on manufacturer. 3. 'Virgin' or 'Pure' Rubber Mats - These mats are imported from Malaysia. They're durable, but have a tendency to be a little slick when they get wet. These mats tend not to curl. Warranty: 8 years or more depending on manufacturer. |
